Fundraising

While the Wiki is first being populated, examples of formatting are provided below in the form of an example student and regular chapter.

General Example

Volunteer at a Theme Park

Some theme parks offer volunteer programs, where non-profits can work a shift to raise funds for their organization (and get free tickets in the process). Inquire at your local amusement park for information on any programs that may exist for your organization.

Merchandise

Selling T-shirts and other merchandise is a great way to improve the comradery of your chapter as well as make some money. One of the most popular websites to do this with is CustomInk.com, which offers very affordable prices on shirts as well as other custom products. You should also check with local screen printing shops, which can probably offer a rate that is competitive with online merchants. Some general tips for selling merchandise:

  • Ask for ideas from your group and then vote for the top designs to offer
  • Estimate prices based on anticipated sales and subsequent discounts for such quanities
  • Order a few extras, which can be sold to members who did not order or offered as prizes at future meetings
  • Make sure to plan plenty of lead time for production and shipping before distribution
  • For student chapters, get in touch with alumni to offer merchandise in order to increase sales

Restaurant nights

Many chain and local restaurants offer fundraising nights for local groups. Inquire at popular local eateries for details. Make sure that restaurants are within a reasonable distance and your fundraiser is scheduled for a good date (eg. not during mid-terms/finals or holidays).

Pizza delivery

Some pizza joints offer groups the ability to deliver pizza for one night and keep all the tips.

Poker tournament/Game night

Organize a game night in your community to raise money. This can be as simple as a poker tournament or a video game (Eg. Mario Kart) competition. Make sure to keep costs down, and, if permitted, raise additional money by selling snacks and drinks during the event.

UGA Atmospheric Sciences Vehicle Decals

The University of Georgia Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society sold "UGA Atmospheric Sciences" Decals to faculty, students, and alumni with the university's meteorology and atmospheric sciences program. The decals were sold for $5.00 each, and all monies made will be used for future AMS events.

UGA AMS Weather Calendars

The University of Georgia Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society sold 2013 calendars as a fundraiser for our organization. Earlier in the year, we held a weather photography contest that was open to University of Georgia students and the Athens community. There were amazing photograph submissions, and the winning photos were chosen for the calendar.

Each calendar was $15.00, and all proceeds went back to our organization. We chose a local Athens, GA company to print our calendars because we wanted our money to go back into the community. Each month features one of the winning photos, and a brief caption of the photo. In addition, holidays and other special events are included.

Our organization is always seeking to provide our members with enriching, engaging, and educational activities, and with the money made from the calendars, we will be able to do so.

Homemade Chocolate Sales

The University of Georgia Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society hosted two separate homemade chocolate sales in the Geography Building. UGA AMS partnered with a local chocolatier to make dozens of delectable treats. From peanut butter clusters to milk chocolate lightning bolts, the sale was a big hit, and many students and faculty enjoyed sweet treats that went for a great cause. UGA AMS sold chocolate in February for Valentine's Day and in March for Easter.

Lyndon State Talent Show

One of the most popular and attended events on the Lyndon State Campus is the annual Talent Show, put on by our student chapter. The talent show was held this year on December 12, with auditions held in early December. Judges included the college President and Provost, an Atmospheric Sciences department professor, the student body president, and the student chapter president and vice president. Prizes were donated by local businesses. As a result of the recent devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan, it was decided that 100% of ticket sale proceeds would be donated to the Philippines Red Cross. We were able to donate over $500!

Sugar Bowl

MU AMS participates in a yearly fundraiser with a local Millersville Restaurant, Sugar Bowl. Millersville AMS members volunteer to make deliveries for Sugar Bowl from approximately 5:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. It is broken up into four, two-hour shifts. Two MU AMS member drivers are assigned to each shift, along with four other members to handle the food and money. These members are split up into two groups for optimal delivery performance. MU AMS receives money through this fundraiser by keeping all tips received from the deliveries in this nine-hour time span.

Yankee Candles

Members of MU AMS sold Yankee candles to their friends and family over our Fall Break in October. MU AMS received packets from Yankee Candles for each member to sell a variety of items. The merchandise came approximately three weeks later for members to pick up and deliver. This was our most successful fundraiser of the school year.

Bingo Nights

At least once a semester, MU AMS holds a bingo night for AMS members and non-AMS members in Millersville University's science complex, Caputo. Bingo cards are sold to participants that give them the opportunity to win a variety of different prizes from candy to stuffed animals to various gift cards. Approximately ten rounds are played with varying rules and ways to win.

Red Robin

MU AMS teams up with a local Red Robin restaurant for a fundraiser every year. MU AMS makes flyers which members hand out to their friends and colleagues to promote this fundraiser. People present this flyer at Red Robin during their meal, and MU AMS will receive ten percent of their total bill, not including alcoholic beverages. The flyer must be given to the waiter-waitress in order for MU AMS to receive the ten percent, and the flyers cannot be handed out directly outside of the restaurant.

Recycling Wars

MU AMS held a "Recycling Wars" fundraiser for the first time in 2013. Four Recycling bins were placed outside the Weather Center- one for each class. A points system was created for various sizes and types of recyclables. Members had to wash the recyclables before they were placed in the bin. This ran for approximately one month. AMS officers emptied the bins as they got full and calculated each class's points. The winning class received free pizza at the next AMS meeting.

Penny Wars

MU AMS holds a yearly "Penny Wars" fundraiser. Four jugs are placed in the Weather Center for approximately one month. The objective is for each class to get as many points as possible. Pennies represent positive points, while all other forms of change and dollar bills represent negative points. Members can fill their jugs with as many pennies much as possible, while sabotaging other classes by putting dollar bills and other change into their jars as well. The class with the most points (or the least negative points) wins free pizza at an AMS meeting in December.

We filed for 501 (C) 3 status for our Student Award named after a former member Dewey Stowers who provided some initial money for the award.

We ask the restuarants to provide the student award 20% of our dinner check when we have a dinner social at their restaurant.

We ask local businesses to provide gift cards for a fundraiser for our student award. Members donate money at our annual banquet for tickets and they may win a prize,

We will shortly be selling chapter t-shirts with a small donation of the price of the t-shirt made to the chapter,

So that student members can attend the banquet which is more expensive than our other socials, we have an option (started this year 2013) whereby members can not only purchase their meal online but they can donate and fund a student banquet ticket.

2013-2014 Our chapter looked for local grant opportunities to obtain more funds to support our chapter's outreach events. We applied and was awarded a grant from the Tampa Bay Estuary Program for $5,000 which will mostly be used on equipment.

Many of the restaurants that hosted our social events agreed to return a portion of the check to our chapter to support our scholarship fund for the Dewey Stowers merit award. Several local businesses also donated gift cards to raise additional funds for our student award. .

2014-2015

Dewey Stowers Merit Award

This chapter specific award is meant to recognize and honor exceptional students in meteorology. The award is funded through generous donations of chapter members and others wishing to make a donation during the annual Chapter Banquet.

Pancake Breakfast (March 2013)

To raise funds for our club, our chapter hosted a pancake breakfast inside of the Environmental Science and Technology building at WKU. Our chapter donated their time as well as their supplies to cook and sell pancakes to the students of WKU.

2013-2014

Yankee Candle (October 2013)

The Yankee Candle fundraiser was an excellent way for our chapter to raise funds for our club. For a couple of weeks, members of our local chapter sold Yankee Candles to as many people as possible, and at the end of the selling period we got to keep a portion of the money.

Yard Sale for Relay for Life (October 2013)

To give back to the community, our local chapter held a yard sale with items donated from our members. All of the proceeds from the yard sale were donated to Relay for Life.

Bake Sale (March 2014)

In March, we hosted a bake sale to raise money for our chapter. Members donated their supplies and time to bake and sell cookies, brownies, and muffins. We raised $113.21.

Walking Taco Sale (March 2014)

In addition to the bake sale, we hosted a walking taco sale to raise money for our chapter. A walking taco is a bag of Fritos filled with taco meat, lettuce, cheese, sauce, etc. on top. This was one of our best and most popular fundraisers, raising $425.19.
